In his words at the midday Angelus on this second Sunday of Advent, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the prophecy from Isaiah 40 in today's readings for Mass. In it, the prophet announces the liberation of the Israelites from years of Exile: "In the desert, prepare the way of the Lord!" (Isaiah 40:3). Applying Isaiah's prophecy to the coming of Jesus, the Holy Father said, "He inaugurated an exodus that is not only earthly and historical - and therefore provisional - but that is radical and definitive: the passage from the kingdom of evil to the Kingdom of God, from the dominion of evil and death to that of love and life." After the prayer, he asked everyone to pray for Alexy II, the Orthodox Church Patriarch of Moscow, who died on Friday.
