Hello Teresa,

Isn't it fascinating to see the comparisons in different religious traditions like the monks using the rosary beads like in the Vedic traditions. I just have one question. What were they doing with the mirror type object in the ritual at the start of the video?

Thank you

Teresa

Hi. The round object in the first video is called a "monstrance". It is used for Eucharistic adoration. A priest puts a blessed host into the monstrance in order to display it for people who are praying. Catholics believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. So, when Catholics are adoring the Eucharist, they are worshiping Christ who is present in it. Eucharistic adoration can take several forms. One common form is called Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, which is probably what you see in the video. The benediction of the blessed sacrament is usually done in the evening. A priest puts a blessed host into the monstrance and places it on the alter. All present kneel in silent adoration (prayer). Quiet hymns are sung, like the ones in the video, while people pray silently. It may be done either alone or in combination with other liturgies, such as evening prayer prayed from a prayer book (as you see used in the video), or the stations of the cross, or some other form of prayer.

LAST NIGHT WE WATCHED FR. VINCENT MINNELLI ON THE CATHOLIC CHANNEL SPEAKING OF HIS WORK IN PERU WITH MSPTM. WE WERE QUITE INSPIRED WITH HIS ADDRESS AND WANTED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIS WORK. WE COPIED YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND WERE DISAPPOINTED WHEN WE COULDN'T OPEN THE 2 VIDEOS ABOUT HIS PARISH IN PERU. WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY WE WERE NOT ABLE TO OPEN THEM. PLEASE ADVISE.

Pat and George, I am sorry that the videos will not play any more. Those videos were embedded from the Daily Motion website, which is similar to YouTube. Daily Motion has changed its policies since I posted them, or else the person who first loaded them on Daily Motion has marked them "private" when they were previously available to embed in other websites (such as this one). I looked just now for similar videos on YouTube and could not find one.
